The original Thieves Oil, also known as Four Thieves Vinegar, is an antimicrobial elixir with 15th century origins. Legend has it that during the bubonic plague in Europe and Asia, four thieves made it a habit to rob the deceased of anything of value. These bodies were highly contagious with the plague, however, the villains never contracted the plague because they reportedly had made a magic tonic to protect themselves. It was said that they wore hats and masks that smelled of vinegar, garlic and herbs and spices like cloves and rosemary.
