While drinking a well-made martini, it occurred to co-founder Kristin Donnelly that mixing cocktails is much like blending ingredients to create beauty products. And just as cocktails had grown-up quite a bit in the last decade, the beauty world was ready for interesting, sophisticated and evocative products designed to appeal to both men and women.

Kristin taught herself to make lip balm (her favorite beauty product) in her New York City apartment. With a background in food, she knew that it was important to start with great ingredients—for lip balm, that meant organic, food-grade oils and butters as well as beeswax. Instead of flavor oils, she prefers to scent her products with pure essential oils and botanical-infused oils. After tinkering for a year, she settled on formulas her lips liked better than others on the market.

Next, she needed a name. She and her husband, Phil, cycled through lots of ideas and then one night, over dinner, he said, “What about our middle names.” And thus, Stewart & Claire was born. The couple now runs Stewart & Claire from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
