L'Eau de Paille Eau de Parfum
"The scent of straw, hay... you can almost hear the crunch of the straw on your skin."
Why we're addicted: It's a woody green fragrance for men and women.
Wheat, Grasses, Frankincense, Vetiver.
It was blond,
In a freshly cut field that extended as far as the eye could see, a compact group of men, women and children on the road dispatched about 20 gleaners to cover the hectare of farmland. The cut wheat rustled underfoot while the slopes of a ditch along the road cast their shadow on the thick green tufts of grass. And the sun reigned supreme. A boy wiped the sweat from his brow with the sleeve of his cotton shirt. He filled his lungs and sighed loudly as he exclaimed, Its baking out here!
The village church bell rang three. Armfuls of stalks harvested in the crook of my elbow weigh on my chest. It would have taken little imagination for me to confuse my bundle with the bouquets of gladioli gifted to a star or an exiled queen before her departure. Spontaneous laughter filled the air in that summer of 1954, promising a happy end to the season. Despite the abundant harvest and the joy it conjured, my ankles still bear the memory of the stalks poking through my short socks. A biting warning, at least as sharp as a banderilla, about what would come next. About the wide, inviting smile on the man leaning his back up against a stack of wheat as he worked the stem of a cornflower through his clenched teeth. Renouncing pleasure as others do evil, I pretended to be distracted, clung to indifference and refused to return his gaze. I didnt know then that I was condemning myself by withdrawing from the world like that in search of the ideal. Because he would have been the instrument of my duality. Like the absolute entity of creation I dare call my inhabitant, he would have bridged the gap between life and death.
I remember the stalks tangled in his hair, but I remember the color as well: it was blond.
His essence was that of a dry eau, for those who dont like to get wet.
