When Campari first asked Stewart & Claire to create a Negroni lip balm, they thought it was impossible.

This cocktail contains only three ingredients, but each of these ingredients (gin, Campari and sweet vermouth) includes who-knows-how-many secret botanicals. After a lot of tinkering, Stewart & Claire came up with a spiced orange and juniper-scented lip balm that does the Negroni justice.

Spicy and citrusy, with a hint of juniper, like the Campari cocktail.

Packaged in a custom .15 ounce/black tubes made from recycled plastic.

While drinking a well-made martini, it occurred to co-founder Kristin Donnelly that mixing cocktails is much like blending ingredients to create beauty products. And just as cocktails had grown-up quite a bit in the last decade, the beauty world was ready for interesting, sophisticated and evocative products designed to appeal to both men and women.

Kristin taught herself to make lip balm (her favorite beauty product) in her New York City apartment. With a background in food, she knew that it was important to start with great ingredients—for lip balm, that meant organic, food-grade oils and butters as well as beeswax. Instead of flavor oils, she prefers to scent her products with pure essential oils and botanical-infused oils. After tinkering for a year, she settled on formulas her lips liked better than others on the market.

Next, she needed a name. She and her husband, Phil, cycled through lots of ideas and then one night, over dinner, he said, “What about our middle names.” And thus, Stewart & Claire was born. The couple now runs Stewart & Claire from Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
