ThLegend has it that in 1380 the Prior of the Carthusian Monastery of St. James on Capri gathered a bouquet of the most beautiful flowers he could find on the island to give to the visiting Queen Giovanna. The lush mix of white flowers remained in the same water for three days, giving the fluid a mysterious and bewitching fragrance. A friar versed in alchemy traced the origin of the scent back to the wild carnation of Capri, and as the monks began distilling local flowers and herbs to create fragrance blends this accord later became the inspiration for the first perfume of Carthusia I Profumi di Capri, Fiori di Capri.

Fast-forward to 1948, when the current Prior discovered the old perfume formula in a journal, and with the Pope’s permission revealed it to a chemist from Piemonte in Northern Italy. Thus, the smallest perfume laboratory in the world was born, and they called it Carthusia I Profumi di Capri.

The tradition lives on, and the creation methods used by the Carthusian monks are still in practice today. Centuries-old knowledge flawlessly combines with natural, superior-quality proprietary ingredients, some hand-picked on Capri’s Mount Solaro, Carthusia I Profumi di Capri has truly developed a culture of perfume unique in the world, continuing the legacy of the past with all stages of production carried out by hand in small batches to guarantee the ultimate exquisite craftsmanship.
