For thousands of years, sandalwood has been the most coveted of sacred woods because it is the most fragrant. Form the opening of the store on boulevard Saint Germain, Diptyque offeres the precious boxes made of it. In Tonkin, sandalwood accompanied the childhood of Yves Coueslant, when he and his family went to enjoy the mountain air between Haiphong and Tam Dao.

For Diptyque, he sought a woody fragrance with pure, oriental woods notes: an unembellished, magnetic, lusty sandalwood evloking his impressions of Asia in the sweltering heat and vine-filled darkness of the jungle. He remembered the scent of the temples, the forests, the trees with mysterious hearts and the thick bark that was burned to honor the gods. The torpor of an afternoon nap, the blades of a fan stirring the heavy air. And somewhere in the mountains, the trumpeting of elephants hauling uprooted trees. Tam Dao was created in 2003.
