After a long journey, the white elephant Gandjouli was on her way back home. In her trunk she held the first ever bottle of patchouli. From one end of India to the other, men and women followed her intoxicated, fascinated by this enchanting fragrance. And the proud elephant walked without stopping, without resting, jealously guarding her vial of perfume. And then one night, exhausted, she finally slept. No one knows what she saw in her dream, but at dawn, she left her perfume as an offering at a shrine by the roadside. A happy, sensual rain of patchouli immediately fell on the earth and, in front of the procession of people, the divine Gandjouli flew to the sky.
